The recently released teaser trailer for James Gunn's upcoming "Superman" film, slated for a July 11, 2025 release, has ignited a spectrum of reactions from fans and critics alike.

Well, here we go. The new Superman teaser trailer has definitely been subject to variety of opinions and a bit of controversy. Let's break it down.
Visually, the trailer offers a fresh take on the iconic superhero. David Corenswet's portrayal of Superman is showcased in a new suit, which has been a focal point of discussion. A promotional clip features Corenswet alongside NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal and director James Gunn, highlighting the suit's design and the transformation from Clark Kent to Superman. This depiction has drawn mixed reactions, with some appreciating the homage to classic transformations reminiscent of Christopher Reeve's era, while time and again we have heard folks express concern over the film's potentially lighter, more humorous tone. We're not particularly impressed with the suit or the potential of too much humor, but we will keep and open mind until we see more footage.
The trailer also delves into the film's ensemble cast, introducing characters like Lex Luthor, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult, and Lois Lane, played by Rachel Brosnahan. Hoult's Luthor is presented as a complex antagonist, with the trailer hinting at ideological confrontations between him and Superman. Brosnahan's Lois Lane appears as a seasoned journalist, with glimpses of her dynamic with Clark Kent suggesting an established relationship. Holt looks a bit...well..underwhelming. Maybe it's the fact that Michael Rosenbaum set the bar for Luthor so high during his Smallville run that we will always be holding others in comparison, but we hope there's more meat to the acting chops in the actual film. Again, keeping an open mind.
A notable highlight is the introduction of Krypto, Superman's super-powered canine companion. The trailer features a scene where a weakened Superman, after a fierce battle, is aided by Krypto in a snowy landscape. This inclusion has been praised by fans for adding depth to Superman's character and expanding the narrative to include his broader mythology. Look, we get that Gunn used his stray for inspiration and it's just not a point of contention to me as far as switching the breed as it has been for a lot of die-hard fanboys. Content is king. Make the dog likeable and endearing and we're all in.
We do need to talk about the visual effects, particularly a flying sequence where the CGI was flat out disturbing in regards to Corenswet's eyes doing a Marty Feldman mid-air . Director James Gunn addressed these concerns, clarifying that the scene utilized practical effects and a wide-angle lens, which may have contributed to the perceived distortion. We're calling BS on that one. Not a good look for a major icon in a major motion picture.
In terms of tone, the trailer suggests a blend of epic action, humor, and heartfelt moments. Gunn aims to present a Superman driven by compassion and an inherent belief in humanity's goodness. Well, that's a good ideology to work from, but again we're concerned with the potential of this film having too much of a humerous tone that was a bit prevelant in Gunn's previous films.
In summary, the "Superman" 2025 teaser trailer offers a fresh perspective on the iconic hero, blending familiar elements with new interpretations. As with any reimagining of a beloved character, it has sparked diverse opinions, setting the stage for further discussions as the release date approaches. We'll be elbow-deep in those discussions with a frank and honest perspective of additional footage leading up to the film.
